Steph Curry’s Incredible Start

Last year we all remember the 67 win season, the splash after splash of three point shots, and the dancing with the Larry O’Brien trophy of the Golden State Warriors. They dazzled the NBA and its fans in a dominant fashion led by league MVP Stephen Curry. He has captivated fans with his ridiculous shots, flamboyant ball handling, and his incredible statistics. But let’s be honest, we all thought it would fade into submission. We have all seen player after player reach their highs but quickly reach their lows.

As the 2015-2016 season kicked off two weeks ago, people all around the league and the world speculated if Curry could continue his success. Through the first games of the season, though, those speculations are completely false! He is off to an incredible, historic start. He has led the Warriors to a 4-0 start with wins over the New Orleans Pelicans twice, the Houston Rockets, and a 50-point thrashing of the Memphis Grizzlies. Through the first four games, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 476-376 while averaging 119 points per game.

As incredible as the Warriors have been, Curry is the main engine powering them. He is averaging 37 points, 6.3 assists, 5 rebounds per games, and only averaging 2 turnovers per contest. For many players, these statistics are unreal, even in a full 48 minute game, but Curry is doing this all while limiting his minutes to only 31 a game. His efficiency on the court is off the charts compared to the rest of the league. For example, in an October 31 game versus the Pelicans, Curry scored 53 points in 36 minutes while compared to fellow MVP candidate, Russell Westbrook, of the Oklahoma City Thunder, he scored 48 points in 48 minutes in a double overtime game against the Orlando Magic.

Curry is typically stereotyped as only a three-point shooter and although he has been shooting 51% of his shots from beyond the arc, he’s really diversified his game and working hard on well rounding his game. Below is his shot chart through the first four games of the 2015-2016 season.Steph Curry’s Incredible StartSteph Curry Shot Chart

Clearly this start to the season is incredible, unheard of, and unlikely to continue but it is apparent that Steph is in no way planning on slowing down. The Warriors will face the Los Angeles Clippers tonight and have to weather the storm of the tough Western Conference.
