UCLA Takes a Back-and-Forth Win Over Texas 5-4

Texas fought tooth and nail to get back in the game multiple times but UCLA comes out on top.

The Horns were led offensively again by Tres Barrera who went 2-3, RBI and Travis Jones who went 2-5, HR, RBI. The Bruins were led offensively by Kort Peterson who went 2-3, HR, 3 RBI and Luke Persico who went 2-4, RBI.

UCLA started off the game scoring two runs in the first off of three consecutive singles from Daniel Amaral, Nick Filia, and RBI single from Persico and a SAC fly from Peterson.

The Bruins would add on their lead in the third inning on a RBI single from Peterson scoring Filia after he reached on an error by Texas pitcher Ty Culbreth.

UCLA starter Jake Bird who came into the game only having pitched out the bullpen throwing 13 innings and an ERA of 1.39. Bird threw 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.

Texas would crack the scoreboard in the sixth and run Bird out of the game in the process. Jones would lead off the inning with a bunt single. He would then score on a Barrera RBI double. Barrera would then score on a RBI single from Kacy Clemens.

Jones would lead off the inning again in the eighth inning but this time with a solo home run to tie up the game at 3.

UCLA would come back to take the lead again in the bottom half of the eighth when Brett Urabe would be hit by a pitch to begin the inning and then come around to score as Texas picked off Filia in between first and second by Urabe came across before the out was made.

Texas would fight back again after UCLA took the lead. Kody Clemens would begin the ninth inning with a double to left field. He would advance on a wild pitch to third as Michael Cantu was walked. Jake McKenzie would then run for Cantu at first.

Brady Harlan would come up and hit the Horns’ second double in the inning to score Clemens and advance McKenzie to third. Texas would then strand the two there to end the inning.

Two pitches into his at-bat, Peterson would hit an absolute bomb to right field to walk it off 5-4 and take game 2 and even up the series with Texas.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the rubber match of the series at Noon PT.
